[Guest post by DRJ] The Obama Administration means more work for sign-makers : “On the road leading to Dulles Airport outside Washington, DC there’s a 10′ x 11′ road sign touting a runway improvement project funded by the federal stimulus. The project cost nearly $15 million and has created 17 jobs, according to recovery.gov. However, there’s another number that caught the eye of ABC News: $10,000. That’s how much money the Washington Airports Authority tells ABC News it spent to make and install the sign – a single sign – announcing that the project is “Funded by The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act” and is “Putting America Back to Work.” The money for …

[Guest post by DRJ] Louisiana Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu responds to the Obama Administration’s new offshore drilling moratorium [emphasis in original]: “ About an hour ago, Secretary Salazar announced ‘new deepwater drilling suspensions.’ Unfortunately, this new plan does not address many of the concerns expressed by the experts, the court system, and families and businesses along the Gulf Coast. “I am particularly alarmed by the Department of the Interior’s continued insistence that allowing deepwater drilling to move forward ‘would pose a threat of serious, irreparable, or immediate harm or damage to the marine, coastal, and human environment.’ That claim contradicts testimony given by drilling experts and ignores the history of oil and gas operations in the Gulf. “If this Commission and our nation are…

[Guest post by DRJ] The Houston Chronicle reports the Obama Administration will reissue a nearly identical offshore drilling moratorium that was previously overturned by a Louisiana federal district court and the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals: “According to a summary of the new order obtained by Hearst Newspapers and the Houston Chronicle, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s new ban — technically a suspension of deep-water drilling activities — would apply until Nov. 30, unless he decides to lift it earlier. The Interior Department is citing its authority under the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act in imposing the four-month suspension. In effect, the new suspension is largely a repeat of the May 30 order that halted drilling on 33 deep-water projects in the Gulf of Mexico — even though it is written with …

[Guest post by DRJ] A Minnesota study says convicted felons may have provided the deciding margin in Senator Al Franken’s win over Norm Coleman: “The six-month election recount that turned former “Saturday Night Live” comedian Al Franken into a U.S. senator may have been decided by convicted felons who voted illegally in Minnesota’s Twin Cities. That’s the finding of an 18-month study conducted by Minnesota Majority, a conservative watchdog group, which found that at least 341 convicted felons in largely Democratic Minneapolis-St. Paul voted illegally in the 2008 Senate race between Franken, a Democrat, and his Republican opponent, then-incumbent Sen. Norm Coleman. The final recount vote in the race, determined six months after Election Day, showed Franken beat Coleman by 312 votes — fewer votes than…

[Guest post by DRJ] The offshore oil companies won another legal battle today against the Obama Administration: “A federal appeals court on Thursday rejected the Obama administration’s request to temporarily reinstate a moratorium on deep-water drilling that has idled rigs across the Gulf of Mexico. The decision was issued about an hour after arguments concluded late this afternoon in the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The administration had wanted the three-judge panel to temporarily reimpose the ban while it appeals a lower court’s June 22 to toss it out as too broad…

[Guest post by DRJ] General McChrystal will retire with 4-star rank as a parting gift from President Obama: “Gen. Stanley McChrystal will retain his four-star rank when he retires from the military, the White House said Tuesday. The decision means the general will earn about $149,700 per year before taxes in military retirement pay.” As usual, the taxpayers will be the ones paying for Obama’s generosity. Who says it doesn’t pay to vote for Obama? – DRJ

[Guest post by DRJ] Mark Steyn’s most recent essay is The Unengaged President , and he isn’t talking about whether our President is available or not: “Stanley McChrystal is a liberal who voted for Obama and banned Fox News from his HQ TV. Which may at least partly explain how he became the first U.S. general to be lost in combat while giving an interview to Rolling Stone: They’ll be studying that one in war colleges around the world for decades. The executives of BP were unable to vote for Obama, being, as we now know, the most sinister duplicitous bunch of shifty Brits to pitch up offshore since the War of 1812. But, in their “Beyond …

[Guest post by DRJ] Quoting from the Financial Post at the Instapundit : “Three days after the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico began on April 20, the Netherlands offered the U.S. government ships equipped to handle a major spill, one much larger than the BP spill that then appeared to be underway. “Our system can handle 400 cubic metres per hour,” Weird Koops, the chairman of Spill Response Group Holland, told Radio Netherlands Worldwide, giving each Dutch ship more cleanup capacity than all the ships that the U.S. was then employing in the Gulf to combat the spill. To protect against the possibility that its …

[Guest post by DRJ] According to the Maritime Executive Magazine , the Administration says no oil skimming vessels have been turned away and no Jones Act waivers are needed to skim more than 3 miles offshore: HAS THE JONES ACT RESULTED IN FOREIGN VESSELS, PARTICULARLY FOREIGN SKIMMING VESSELS, BEING TURNED AWAY? The National Incident Command (NIC) says there has been “no case” where an offer of foreign assistance has been declined because of the Jones Act. In fact, the U.S. State Department has said that “[a] number of offers of assistance have been accepted,” including Mexican skimmers, Norwegian skimming systems and other assets from Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands. The Jones Act does not even apply to skimming operations outside of 3 …

[Guest post by DRJ] Dan Collins looks behind the Obama Administration’s offshore drilling decisions: “Meanwhile, what’s not receiving a lot of focus is Obama’s own economic interests in preventing Gulf drilling. As I mentioned yesterday, Obama’s wealth is largely held in two Vanguard funds. Vanguard was among the companies that dumped BP stock shortly before the disaster. It now turns out that BP informed the office of mineral managment that there were problems with the well back in mid-February. That led to the sacking of Birnbaum, no doubt, though Pelosi tried, with her usual mendacity, to blame it on burrowed-in Bush holdovers. Apart from the timing of the stock dumping, and the revelation that the feds had indeed been informed earlier on of…

[Guest post by DRJ] Picking up where I started off this morning … with President Obama and General Stanley McChrystal : “Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal should not lose his job because of the article about him in Rolling Stone magazine. If anyone deserves blame for the latest airing of the administration’s internal feuds over Afghanistan, it is President Obama. For months Obama has tolerated deep divisions between his military and civilian aides over how to implement the counterinsurgency strategy he announced last December. The divide has made it practically impossible to fashion a coherent politico-military plan, led to frequent disputes over tactics and contributed to a sharp deterioration in the administration’s relations with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. The virtue of the Rolling Stone article is that…

[Guest post by DRJ] This is astounding : “In an unannounced meeting Monday morning, scientists who felt their views were improperly used to justify a federal moratorium on deepwater oil drilling spent an hour trying to convince Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to soften the ban. They failed to win any immediate concessions, although Salazar said he remained committed to finding “ways to make the moratorium better” and agreed to a follow-up meeting in two weeks, said Ken Arnold of the National Academy of Engineering. The group of experts complained earlier this month that Salazar had consulted them on a May 27 report on drilling safety and then falsely implied that…

[Guest post by DRJ] Yesterday I posted on Arizona Senator Jon Kyl’s claim that President Obama said he won’t secure the border until Americans agree to amnesty. Today the White House responded by denying Kyl’s claim: “Arizona Republican Jon Kyl dropped a bombshell on Friday when he told supporters in Phoenix that during a one-on-one meeting on immigration, President Obama said he’s “holding it hostage” — “it” being border security — in exchange for comprehensive reform. But according to the White House, Obama made no such threat. “The president didn’t say that…

[Guest post by DRJ] How much free time is a chief executive allowed during a time of crisis? When it comes to President Obama , apparently quite a bit: “… here are some of the things the president was doing instead of meeting with the company during the 58 days since the spill began: playing six rounds of golf, chilling with the Yankees, meeting with his “buddy” Bono, singing with Paul McCartney, raising money for Barbara Boxer, calling Rahm Emanuel to set up more golf time, vacationing with his family, dining with…

[Guest post by DRJ] ABC News reports the U.S. Coast Guard refused to let 16 Louisiana skimmer barges return to the Gulf for 24 hours pending confirmation the barges had life vests and fire extinguishers: “Sixteen barges sat stationary today, although they were sucking up thousands of gallons of BP’s oil as recently as Tuesday. Workers in hazmat suits and gas masks pumped the oil out of the Louisiana waters and into steel tanks. It was a homegrown idea that seemed to be effective at collecting the thick gunk. “These barges work. You’ve seen them work. You’ve seen them suck oil out of…

[Guest post by DRJ] A few more thoughts about today’s meeting between President Obama and the BP officials: BP’s Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg is getting a lot of press for saying BP cares about the “small people.” He’s Swedish and this strikes me as a translation problem that shouldn’t be an issue. But it will be because too many people want BP to be mean, bad or evil — as well as financially responsible. BP will not pay dividends this year . It’s only June and I assume that means BP won’t pay dividends for 3 quarters. I’m no…

[Guest post by DRJ] If this is true, it seems like decision-making malpractice by the President and his hand-picked team: “Three days after the Gulf oil rig explosion, the Netherlands offered to send in oil skimmers to pump oil off of the surface of the ocean. The Obama Administration turned them down because they were not 100% efficient and small amounts of oil would be pumped back into the Gulf with the excess water. EPA regulations do not allow for residue water to contain any oil. So rather than …
