A “breaking” email I received from USA Today this morning is a definite sign of establishment press scrambling to give deceptive cover to an Obama administration mandate whose unpopularity continues to grow as more people become aware of it. It also shows the lengths to which the press will go to keep the relatively disengaged, which would include those who only primarily informed via email and other brief alerts without digging further, from encountering basic facts. The email pretends that the president is about to announce a “decision” (as opposed to changing one), and refers to a “rule” without saying where the rule came from, or why: Points: …

(Steven Hayward) Oh why not? Courtesy of Megan McArdle at The Atlantic and a mischievous suggestion from Glenn Reynolds is the chart below showing that the trend of income inequality has reversed sharply the last few years. And what do you know, the shape of the graph does indeed look a lot like the shape of the various global temperature graphs that show a halt in warming over the last decade or so (I’ve used Roy Spencer’s here). Maybe income inequality , rather than greenhouse gases, cause global warming?? It would be the perfect Field Theory …

‘To Stop the Multiplication of the Unfit’ by Michelle Malkin Creators Syndicate Copyright 2012 If you aren’t creeped out by the No Birth Control Left Behind rhetoric of the White House and Planned Parenthood, you aren’t listening closely enough. The anesthetic of progressive benevolence always dulls the senses. Wake up. When a bunch of wealthy white women and elite Washington bureaucrats defend the trampling of religious liberties in the name of “increased access” to “reproductive services” for “poor” women, the ghost of Margaret Sanger is cackling. As she wrote in her autobiography, Sanger founded Planned Parenthood…

In yet another installment of the “New Tone Rules Only Apply to Republicans” series, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) took to the floor of the Senate on Wednesday to accuse “Republicans” of using the payroll tax cut bill to extort the Democrat majority for the right to personally poison the American people. Yes, you heard that right: the Senate Majority Leader took a page out of former Rep. Alan “Republicans want you to die quickly” Grayson’s (D-FL) book and delivered that accusation from the floor of the United States Senate. Naturally, this came only…

Via ABC News, Senator Jim DeMint thinks a contested convention is possible: Sen. Jim DeMint, the South Carolina Republican and Tea Party leader told ABC News’ Jonathan Karl he wouldn’t be surprised to see things go all the way to the convention in August in Tampa, Fla. Karl asked if he thought there was room for another candidate to enter the race at this point. Keep reading this post . . .

(Steven Hayward) As a short follow up to yesterday’s post about the new Alford book about JFK’s appetites, don’t miss Timothy Noah in The New Republic , who’s not likely to be booked on Chris Matthews’ show any time soon. The conclusion to Noah’s “JFK, Monster” is bracing: I don’t usually say this about scandal stories, but Alford’s tale ought to occasion further reassessment of a president we already knew to be morally compromised. Good for Noah and TNR , but I’m not going to hold my breath. And needless to say, if you want more in

Appearing as a guest on Thursday’s Piers Morgan Tonight on CNN, former CBS News anchor expressed agreement with GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul in opposing U.S. involvement in the civil war in Syria to protect the civilian population from the terror regime of authoritarian ruler, President Bashar Assad. After describing what he believes should be done to put pressure on Assad, he brought up Congressman Paul’s left-leaning views on the Middle East: However, and, by the way, this is one reason that Ron Paul continues …

Best selling author and conservative radio host Mark Levin slammed Barack Obama on Hannity’s show last night on FOX News. The Right Scoop has the transcript: This isn’t about women. It’s not about contraception. This is about a president of the United States who has no respect for the Constitution, no respect for the First Amendment, and also has no respect for people of faith – and I’m not trying to be controversial, but there’s no balancing involved here. I didn’t know we were having a problem getting contraceptives in this country. I mean they fund Planned Parenthood who hands out this stuff like candy. So there’s really no problem in this country with access. What he’s trying to do is break down that line between church and state in reverse and it’s contemptible!

From my pal Nell Scovell: “Instead of Firing Up The Base, Romney Mistakenly Fires The Base.” You can actually work with it. Maybe: “After failing to fire up the base, a frustrated Romney decides to fire the base.” Mix and match. I think it’s got potential.

On the one hand, I agree with Ilya that bans on same-sex marriage could be described as sex discrimination. On the other hand, from opponents’ perspective, the point is that “marriage” has been defined for several thousand years in Judeo-Christian culture as between a man and a woman, and retaining that definition is not sex discrimination. Imagine, for example, that having a bar mitzvah in Israel provided boys with various and important rights and obligations. [Let me tighten the hypothetical a bit.] Imagine that in Israel, any thirteen year old Jewish boy could go to city hall and get a certificate of bar mitzvah, regardless of whether he had a religious bar mitzvah ceremony, and imagine further that this certificate provides the boys who get it with various important rights and privileges. Israel, recognizing …

“A rab Spring” lurches on : The country that witnessed the Arab world’s most sweeping revolution is foundering. So is its capital, where a semblance of normality has returned after the chaotic days of the fall of Tripoli last August. But no one would consider a city ordinary where militiamen tortured to death an urbane former diplomat two weeks ago, where hundreds of refugees deemed loyal to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi waited hopelessly in a camp and where a government official acknowledged that “freedom is a problem.” Much about the scene on Wednesday was lamentable, perhaps because the discord was so commonplace. This is the result of not knowing who we were supporting. …
