This morning we awoke to find that the New York Times Editorial Board and Redstate’s Erick Erickson had aligned themselves on an issue by both taking a shot at the American Energy & Infrastructure Jobs Act , a bill the House will consider next week. Usually when a situation like that arises, something’s amiss. And that is certainly the case today. On Monday, Andrew Rosenthal of the New York Times had a post on his Loyal Opposition blog analyzing whether or not abortion is rare. Interestingly, he argued that both sides in the abortion debate have a vested interest in making the case that abortions are common. People who are pro-life want to call for greater restrictions on abortion by suggesting that access to abortion is too easy. Supporters of legal abortion want to make the case that obtaining an abortion is fairly common and thus part of the medical and cultural mainstream. According to the Guttmacher Institute, there were 1.2 million abortions performed in 2008. Rosenthal finds that during the same year, there were more blood transfusions and cardiac catherizations and about the same number of upper gastrointestinal endoscopies performed. …

I was on MSNBC a short while ago with a Democratic strategist who insisted that her party held the upper hand in the debate over the Obama administration’s attempt to force religious groups to offer contraception, sterilization, and abortifacients to their employers. (She didn’t describe the policy quite that way, of course.) T oday’s economic statistical releases: Initial claims for unemployment fell 15,000 last week to 358,000, while the 4-week average dropped 11,000 to 366,250. This is strongly positive for job growth. Or it means that, after losing 7 million jobs since 2007, we’ve pretty much fired everyone who can usefully be fired. The Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index rose to -41.7 from -44.8 last week.
