On the debut of the Melissa Harris-Perry show on MSNBC, after starting the show with a discussion of why she believes it is a good thing for the Republican Party to be a strong party – for the sake of having a competitive, multi-party system to give voters choices – the show soon predictably moved toward talk of alleged racism in the Republican Party. At one point, she showed video footage of liberal Republican presidential candidate Nelson Rockefeller from the 1964 Republican National Convention condemning “extremists” in the party. After a clip of a black audience member applauding the speech, Harris-Perry cracked: I love the last black Republican left in the party just clapping, “Yes, please repudiate them,” right? Unfortunately, I didn’t see that part of the show. I have enjoyed her clear discussion of the politics affecting us all, on MSNBC’s lineup so far. But I was kind of taken aback by her handling of the religious discussion and all the inane talk linking the civil rights struggle as it relates to women’s and African American rights with gay rights. Folks GLBT rights don’t have the same foundation as those of women and Blacks. Women and Blacks had no decision to make concerning their gender or their race. They were indeed born into that demographic. In the case of GLBT there is a difference. It all boils down to sex. Because if it weren’t about sex those designations wouldn’t be necessary. As individuals we all have the same rights and responsibilities. Add a sexual relationship and things get complicated. Because of the decision to have sex with someone of the same gender now society as a whole is confronted with having to accept men who have sex with men and women who have sex with women as a group. Because of a decision? Nobody decides to be born as a woman or man. What automatically puts women/men in a group is being born a woman/man. Having sex with another person is a decision. It is not required to live as is food, drink and shelter. Smoking cigarettes is a decision in the same way. Noone is born smoking, drinking or having sex. People are born male, female or as an hermaphrodite. Not as smokers, drinkers or procreating. At some point people decide to smoke, drink and choose a sex partner. In other words deciding to have sex with people of the same gender doesn’t constitute a group in the same way as someone being born male or female. MHP is too intelligent to try to draw a parallel between these disparate groups. Its amazing what people will do for money.
