D on’t worry, be happy – It will soon be a bright and happy day in that benighted land: Relations between Egypt ‘s military rulers and the United States threatened to hit a new low after Egyptian security forces launched unprecedented armed raids on a series of high profile human rights and pro-democracy organisations. The raids included targeting the US-government funded National Democratic Institute – founded by former secretary of state Madeleine Albright – and the International Republican Institute, whose chairman is Republican senator John McCain. Both organisations are affiliated…

I wrote about Thatcher today and how she refused to accept British decline , a quality highly relevant to our circumstances today: Part of the volatility in the Republican presidential field is the unfulfilled hunger for a Thatcher-like figure. She had the urgency of an emergency-room surgeon, the rhetorical subtlety of a blowtorch, and the conviction of a desert monk. Tory MP John Biffen called her “a tigress surrounded by hamsters.” But she matched her fearlessness with sound judgment and a positively Prussian work ethic. Needless to say, Thatchers aren’t often on offer. Keep reading this post . . .
(John Hinderaker) The phone has been ringing for quite a while now–I would say since President Obama took office in January 2009. Mr. President, there are millions of unemployed on the line, and they think it’s an emergency. But Obama is still snoozing. Michael Ramirez illustrates the point:
In a radio interview that aired yesterday, Mitt Romney told Hugh Hewitt that while voters shouldn’t expect to hear him announce his ideal cabinet anytime soon, he did share Newt Gingrich’s respect for John Bolton. “I had the interesting experience of reading his book, Surrender Is Not An Option , and in it, he described in some depth the mentality of people who spend their entire life in government,” Romney said in reference to Bolton, whom Gingrich has pledged to appoint secretary of state. “And that is in many cases, they’re more inclined towards getting an agreement than actually getting a result. And as someone from the private sector, I’m a results-oriented guy. And John Bolton’s insistence on good results for America is something I respect.” Keep reading this post . . .
That’s the percentage of likely Iowa caucus-goers who consider Newt Gingrich the “true conservative” in the GOP field, according to the new NBC/Marist poll . Rick Santorum leads on this question, with 23 percent considering him the true conservative. Santorum also leads very narrowly with tea-partiers at 20 percent. (Top-line figures from the poll: Romney 23, Paul 21, Santorum 15.)

CNN has the story about Ron Paul’s 1987 book, written at the time he was leaving Ronald Reagan’s Republican Party to run for president as a Libertarian and ” re-issued in 2007 during Paul’s last presidential bid with a cover photograph of an ominous SWAT Team”: Paul criticized people suffering from AIDS or other contagious diseases for demanding health insurance coverage. “The individual suffering from AIDS certainly is a victim – frequently a victim of his own lifestyle – but this same individual victimizes innocent citizens by forcing them to pay for his care,” Paul wrote. In another chapter on the rights of individuals …
A logical and reasonable decision.
(Steven Hayward) So I’m out on the Left Coast this week and next, enjoying some sunshine and warm weather (forecast to be sunny and 72 here on the central coast on New Year’s day–sorry to all our midwestern friends), and since the light is so good, I did up this two minute video about some of California’s renewable energy “triumphs”: To learn more details about the Tehachapi Pass wind boondoggle, see this blog post and video from Anthony Watts . More holiday season video to come! Stay tuned.

(Steven Hayward) It appears that a Power Line reader wrote directly to Prof. Michael Schlesinger–the subject of yesterday’s diversion about crew cuts –to taunt him: Hey, Mike, I just read your email to Chris Matthews taking him to task for his anti-crew cut bigotry. I was pumping my fist in the air when I saw a picture of you. My God, man! Your HAIR!!! It looks like it’s been chewed by goats. Loosen up that wallet, dude. Step into a barber shop now and then. First, though, let that hair (?) grow out. You look like a kid who just graduated 6th …

N ot! Al Qaeda’s leadership has sent experienced jihadists to Libya in an effort to build a fighting force there, according to a Libyan source briefed by Western counter-terrorism officials. The jihadists include one veteran fighter who had been detained in Britain on suspicion of terrorism. The source describes him as committed to al Qaeda’s global cause and to attacking U.S. interests. The source told CNN that the al Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, personally dispatched the former British detainee to Libya earlier this year as the Gadhafi regime lost control of large swathes of the country. The man arrived …
