Rep. Davis is, of course, the former Democratic candidate for AL-GOV who lost his primary when it turned out that Alabama Democrats actually weren’t ready to vote for an African-American for a statewide race. He’s since then been reassessing his options, but seems to be under a misapprehension: Davis also suggested running as a Republican might be a viable option, but said that the Alabama Republican Party has declined to embrace politicians who have switched parties. He noted that party-switching former congressman Parker Griffith was defeated in a GOP primary last year after leaving the Democratic Party. While not being fully checked out on the vagaries of Alabaman state politics…

Twenty-four years ago, Los Angeles Dodgers VP Al Campanis was forced to resign his position for saying on national TV that blacks lack “the necessities” to be baseball managers and executives. On today's Hardball , Chris Matthews was so enjoying himself mocking Rick Perry's intelligence, that he decided to use a slightly mangled version of the same line on the Texas governor. Video after the jump. Speaking with Susan Page of USA Today, Matthews first said that Perry “doesn't have the brains to be president.” The crowd laughed uproariously, as you'll hear

(Eugene Volokh) So reports OnIslam.net : Bowing to protests pressures, the Maldives has ordered hundreds of luxury hotels to close their spas, a decision expected to affect tourism industry which forms a vital foreign exchange source for the Indian Ocean country. “An Islamic party has been agitating against spas hoping to embarrass the government,” a senior government figure told Agence France Presse (AFP) by telephone asking not to be named. The official confirmed Thursday’s ministry order following the protests that erupted in the country last Friday. Answering a protest call by the opposition Adhaalat, or Justice, Party and several other groups, more than 3,000 people accused President Mohammed Nasheed’s government of compromising principles of Islam and call for Islamic law. The government bowed to…

(Eugene Volokh) My wife and I are organizing a local spelling bee, and watching our children learn spelling; the process made me think of how children can practice their spelling quickly online. It seems to me that it would be helpful to have a Web page or a program that would accept a list of words from a parent or teacher, and then, for each word, look up the audio in some master repository (e.g., at dictionary.com or some such), play the audio for the student who is using the program, ask the student to spell the word, and check the student’s spelling against the correct …

After coming out in support of voter ID laws and donating to Republicans , former Democratic Rep. Artur Davis is continuing his march to the other side of the aisle, telling the Washington Post he could run for office as an independent or even a GOP candidate. “I’ve heard some people at the national level encouraging me to run as an independent for my old office,” Davis told WaPo ‘s Aaron Blake. “While there have been Democrats who have switched down there, the Republican Party has refused to accept them. Do I agree with the agenda items in the Alabama Republican Party? Some I agree with, and some I don’t.” Davis has claimed voter fraud is a major problem and said he’s seen it take place, though he’s repeatedly declined opportunities to back up his broad claims with…

(Eugene Volokh) A Foundation for Individual Rights in Education video, about the now-notorious University of Wisconsin-Stout Firefly poster incident : Here’s a brief summary of the incident from FIRE: On September 12, 2011, Professor Miller posted on his office door an image of Nathan Fillion in Firefly and a line from an episode: “You don’t know me, son, so let me explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you’ll be awake. You’ll be facing me. And you’ll be armed.” On September 16, UWS Chief of Police Lisa A. Walter emailed Miller, notifying him that she had removed the poster and that “it is unacceptable to have postings such …

(Ilya Somin) Some defenders of the Obama health insurance mandate try to scare off opponents by claiming that if the mandate were repealed, the result will be a system of socialized medicine. Presumably, conservatives and libertarians oppose the latter even more than former. Such claims may have led conservative commentator Paul Rahe to argue recently that the individual mandate is even worse than socialized medicine, or at least worse than government-provided health insurance. I think Rahe is wrong. But the more important point is that this is actually a false dichotomy: there are many alternative health care reforms that are more market-friendly than either the mandate or socialized medicine, whether the latter takes the form…

(Eugene Volokh) I blogged about the case a year ago , and now there’s an appellate court decision in it, People v. Walker (Mich. Ct. App. Dec. 27, 2011) . An excerpt: [T]he charge against defendant arises from his alleged unauthorized access to the password-protected email account of his estranged wife, Clara Elizabeth Walker, from July 2009 through August 2009. At the preliminary exam, Clara testified that she filed for divorce from defendant on June 5, 2009, and that defendant had been served with the divorce papers by July 2009. Clara and defendant continued to live in the same home through August 2009. During this time period, Clara had a personal email…

Mitt Romney’s son Matt cracked a birther joke while campaigning for his father today in New Hampshire. CBS News reported: After Mitt Romney’s son made a “birther” joke on the campaign trail, he quickly apologized and downplayed the taboo remarks. President Obama’s re-election team, however, is keeping the moment alive and hoping to earn a few bucks off of it. At an event in New Hampshire today, Romney’s adult son Matt Romney responded to a question regarding the potential release of his father’s tax returns with a joke alluding to doubts about Mr. Obama’s place of birth: “I heard someone suggest the other day that as soon as Obama releases his grades and birth certificate and sort of a long list of things, then maybe he’d…

Chris Matthews showed up from Java Joe's in Des Moines in the 11 am hour on MSNBC Friday to underline the liberal arrogance that in the Obama era, all the country's hatred is against Obama, and apparently liberals are utterly incapable of adding anything to the Hate Quotient. “I heard a voice this morning a woman came up to me and said I’m really for Obama, but I want to end these years of hatred. Now if people start voting for the Republicans because there’s too much divisiveness because of Obama, that’s real trouble for the White House,” Matthews said. He then…

Ron Paul suggested the Jews were behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombings. The New Republic reported, via RedState : One of the more insane claims in Ron Paul’s newsletters was that the Israelis were behind the WTC bombings in 1993: Whether [the 1993 World Trade Center bombing] was a setup by the Israeli Mossad, as a Jewish friend of mine suspects, or was truly a retaliation by the Islamic fundamentalists, matters little.

So what’s the deal with Romney’s tax returns? Or more specifically, what’s the deal with Mitt Romney letting himself get more and more nippy press by refusing to release his tax returns when virtually every serious presidential candidate of the last 40 years has done it? Allow me to explain. We already know Mitt Romney is a really, really wealthy guy. And, though he was born to wealth, he has also made a lot of money himself. He’s also said he’ll release information about his wealth, his assets … a lot of stuff. But just not the taxes. So what’s the deal? It’s pretty simple. We might say that a specter is haunting Mitt Romney — the specter of the Buffett Rule. That’s right, we haven’t heard a lot about the so-called Buffett Rule in…

The media is about to begin the vetting of Rick Santorum and I suspect we’re going to hear a lot about Universal Health Services (“UHS”). Santorum’s involvement in UHS is one of the significant bits of his private sector experience. After his 18 point loss in 2006, UHS appointed Rick Santorum to its Board of Directors. On May 16, 2007, Santorum acquired 10,000 options to purchase Class B common stock. On November 21, 2009, he received another option for 5,000. In 2010, it was options for 15,000 shares and another 15,000 as recently as January 21, 2011, as Santorum begin to entertain thoughts of running for President. On June 15, 2011, Santorum resigned from the board of UHS. Here’s why the media will be …

**Written by Doug Powers The government needs to borrow another $1.2 trillion so they can continue to protect us from bankruptcy. Predictably, the White House tried to get this done on the Friday afternoon heading into a holiday weekend, but circumstances prevented it from happening : HONOLULU (AP) — President Barack Obama is delaying his request for another $1.2 trillion increase in the nation’s debt limit at the request of congressional leaders. It’s basically because of a technicality. The White House had been ready to ask for the increase Friday because the government is within $100 billion of exhausting its current borrowing authority. Congress …
