50 Things Every 18-Year-Old Should Know Well this list is more general principles and advice than specific skills. Though I would add to the mix being able to change a tire without assistance and general first aid plus CPR. You…

[Posted by Karl] “Unprecedented,” just the way The One likes it! Paul Bedard (via JWF ) and Conn Carroll mine the depths of Pres. Obama’s job approval numbers at Gallup . First, Bedard: President Obama’s slow ride down Gallup’s daily presidential job approval index has finally passed below Jimmy Carter, earning Obama the worst job approval rating of any president at this stage of his term in modern political history. Since March, Obama’s job approval rating has hovered above Carter’s, considered among the 20th century’s worst presidents, but today Obama’s punctured Carter’s dismal job approval line. On their comparison chart, Gallup put Obama’s job approval rating …

On Tuesday's Joy Behar Show , the host humorously asked Ann Coulter if her show being canceled was a “vast right-wing conspiracy.” Without skipping a beat, the conservative author said, “No, I think it is a vast Casey Anthony conspiracy” (video follows with transcript and absolutely no need for additional commentary): JOY BEHAR, HOST: I have one more thing to say. Now you were one of my first guests here. ANN COULTER: Thank you. I love this show. BEHAR: And I cherish, I cherish those moments that we’ve spent. COULTER: Me too. BEHAR: Now, but …

Almost: In a bizarre case, a Colorado man is suing the newlywed couple he kidnapped for breach of contract, claiming they agreed to hide him for money after he crashed a stolen vehicle into their yard, then held them at knifepoint. Above: what a maroon. Really? Really. In his lawsuit, 25-year-old Jessie Dimmick of Aurora, contends that after breaking into Jared and Lindsay Rowley’s Topeka-area home while fleeing police, he and the couple reached a legally binding, oral contract that they would hide him for an unspecified amount of money. Dimmick, who is representing himself, is seeking $235,000. He complains that he ended up getting shot by police as a…

At Hillsdale College tonight, Herman Cain said nothing about Ginger White’s accusations. He spoke for roughly 40 minutes, giving a speech that was advertised as a policy talk on foreign affairs and national security. It was curiously light on substance. For an address whose refrain was “peace through strength and clarity,” his views on Afghanistan and other matters remain as unclear as ever. He just seemed out of his depth. When Cain was done, he took no questions. The audience, full of conservatives who would have met him with rapturous approval just a month ago, received him politely but without great enthusiasm. This was not the performance of a candidate who looks determined to battle on.

David Weigel, at Slate , blames the supercommittee Republicans for the failure to reach a deal. His chief evidence: They keep insisting they’re not to blame. They wouldn’t do that if they were innocent! His secondary evidence: They admit that the key difference between the parties was that Democrats insisted on $1 trillion in tax increases and they refused to go along. It was their decision not to go along that prevented an agreement. Neither point is persuasive. Weigel himself cites poll data showing that the public blamed Republicans for the debt-ceiling standoff over the summer. In itself, those polls might explain why blameless Republicans might be particularly eager to make the case for their blamelessness. As it happens, though, I think Weigel overstates the case about how much more Republicans have been spinning the supercommittee failure than Democrats…

As a number of readers have pointed out, it would have been more accurate in our editorial to have described Rep. Barney Frank as the first member of Congress to have voluntarily come out as gay; Rep. Gerry Studds, who was obliged to admit his homosexuality during the 1983 House page scandal, remained in Congress for many more years. Another reader reminds us that Representative Frank was not the first congressman to be caught in a gay-prostitution scandal. That particular distinction belongs to Maryland Republican Robert Bauman, who was charged with soliciting sex from a 16-year-old male prostitute. The charges were later dropped.

Mitt Romney refused to criticize his Massachusetts health-care program tonight, saying he would prefer to lose the primary rather than renounce it. “I’m standing by what I did in Massachusetts,” Romney said on Fox News Channel’s Special Report with Bret Baier. “I’m not trying to dust it aside. I’m absolutely firm that it was the right thing for our state. I’ll defend that and I understand it has political implications. And if it keeps me from winning a primary, so be it . But that happens to be the truth.” Keep reading this post . . .

A story generating a lot of discussion today concerns how former Philadelphia Schools Superintendent Arlene Ackerman, who is receiving $905,000 in severance, has applied for unemployment benefits , and has been promised that the school district will not contest her claim. Not so fast, people. I searched Google and Google News briefly, and found an interesting aspect of the situation which no one in the media apparently wants to consider. It relates to how Ackerman's employment ended. One of many place where that ending is described came from Matt Petrillo at Philadelphia Weekly just three weeks ago . It began thusly: “It’s been 11 weeks since the School Reform Commission unanimously voted to fire public school boss lady Arlene Ackerman.” A quick visit to the relevant page at the Pennsylvania …

In an e-mail to supporters today, Herman Cain again denied that he had an affair with Atlanta businesswoman Ginger White: As you probably heard yesterday, a troubled Atlanta business woman used national media outlets to promulgate a fabricated, unsubstantiated story about a 13 year affair with me. I am writing you today to assure you that this woman’s story is completely false. Keep reading this post . . .

(David Bernstein) My latest article in the Green Bag (link will open seven-page PDF file): (1) First, social reform was not in nearly as much danger from Lochner as the standard story suggests…. (2) The supposed simple-minded formalism of late nineteenth and early twentieth century judges has been called into serious question by recent scholarship…. (3) Brandeis’s Muller brief was not as original as his admirers have suggested…. (4) Brandeis’s brief was not as bold as often portrayed, because Oregon’s attorney general filed a traditional brief focusing on the relevant legal precedents…. (5) Brandeis’s brief, rather than being a social science masterpiece, consisted largely of a “hodgepodge” of reports of factory or health inspectors, testimony before legislative investigating committees, statutes, quotes from medical texts, …

An excellent analysis of the problems facing American Airlines: Legacy airlines are an almost uniquely terrible business to be in. You’ve got an enormous fixed cost, in the form of giant, incredibly expensive planes, and landing slots. Meanwhile, your product has practically no marginal cost — adding an extra passenger to a plane is a very small cost compared to getting the plane in the air. And each passenger slot on a plane is a wasting asset: once the plane takes off, it’s worth nothing to you. Keep reading this post . . .

First, in case you hadn’t read about the most recent shock allegation against GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain, Fox 5 Atlanta posted a story about it yesterday : ATLANTA, Ga. – An Atlanta businesswoman is breaking her silence, claiming she has been involved in a 13-year-long affair with Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain. Over the Thanksgiving weekend, FOX 5 senior I-Team reporter Dale Russell sat down with Ginger White, who had a story to tell. “I’m not proud,” White told Russell. “I didn’t want to come out with this. I did not.”…

Let’s establish this right out of the gate so as not to confuse issues: It is wrong when corporations use child labor. Forgetting the law for a moment, whether it is here in the U.S. or overseas, children are children, and corporations should not exploit children. Got it? With that said, this is not about corporations, this is about families and farms. More specifically, family farms and the overreach of the federal government. For centuries, even before there was Willie Nelson and FarmAid, farming throughout the world (including here in the United States) has largely been a family affair. That is, parents and their children …
