This New York magazine article on the Occupy movement is interesting, and thatâs not a euphemism: author John Heilemann is not only aware that the supposedly leaderless movement has plenty of self-appointed (and Iâd add, âimposedâ) leaders to it, but heâs even willing to admit to it in writing. Heilemann also has some pretty good insights on the Occupy movement, and the Democratic establishment, and how the two are, ah, âinteracting.â All in all, itâs about as fair-minded an article as you could hope to get from somebody who is sympathetic to a movement that thinks that the act of defecating on police cars is a valuable addition to public discourse. And yet: the following bit of advice on what the Occupiersâ long-term goals should be is, well…
I think the major political strengths and weaknesses of Romney and Gingrich more or less cancel out: Romney signed a state mandate into law, Gingrich once supported a federal mandate; Romneyâs a solid debater who wonât make major gaffes, Gingrich is a superb debater whose own cleverness can be his worst enemy; Gingrich has a questionable personal morality but appears to have a principled vision for the country, Romney appears to have an impeccable personal morality but a questionable and perhaps unprincipled vision for the country; Gingrich helped assemble the first Republican Congressional majority in a generation but was forced out amid scandal, Romney ran a successful business and a deep-blue state but his success has pegged him as both a âfat catâ and a âRINOâ; Romney is perceived as the favorite son of the political …
The New York Times reports on how, while Newt Gingrich may not have technically done lobbying, he did help connect companies who hired him with lawmakers: Â Keep reading this post . . .
T odayâs economic statistical releases: The Mortgage Bankers Association reports that mortgage applications were down by -11.7%, but the short Thanksgiving week clouds the significance of this weekâs results. Delving deeper into the report shows new purchase applications were down -0.8% while refinance apps fell -15.3%. The Challenger Job-Cut Report shows layoff announcements are fairly steady this month at 42,474 compared to 42,759 in October and 48,711 last year. ADP, the countryâs largest third-party payroll processor, estimates private payrolls rose 206,000 in November. Weâll see if Fridayâs Employment Situation confirms that. 3Q productivity and costs were revised downward slightly, with productivity increasing at 2.3% annually, while labor costs fell -2.5%. This is pretty much in line with the GDP revision for 3Q. The Chicago PMI indicates a pickup in business activity for the Chicago area, with the index rising to…
O r maybe a better analogy is Nero and Rome. Politicians and hard decisions just donât seem to mix very well do they? It is much better to be Santa Clause than the Grinch. Especially if you want politics to be your career. Maybe thatâs the problem. If you remember correctly, at least in the US, politics was supposed to be a part-time job. But here as in Europe, it has developed into a full-time job that requires excessive pandering …
Welcome to Obama’s “Green Economy”. Two high profile companies have gone bankrupt in the United States — government-backed Solyndra and Evergreen — and analysts anticipate more failures ahead. “Solyndra was just the beginning,” said Jessie Pichel, head of clean energy…
Sometime NRO-nik Hans von Spakovsky and his Heritage Foundation colleague Charles Stimson write in the Examiner today on how â States are violating federal law to benefit illegals .â Their piece (based on a recent Heritage paper ) lays out how a dozen states are brazenly violating federal law by giving illegal-alien students in-state tuition rates without also extending those discount to American and legal-immigrant students from other states. Note that the 1996 federal immigration law did not âheartlesslyâ prohibit states from giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition subsidies â rather, it said that if states choose to do that, out-of-state Americans needed to get the same…
* More than 200 hundred arrested in peaceful sweep of Occupy LA. Iâm not sure exactly what it proves that the Occupy movement keeps being successful in getting even the bluest cities to turn against them. Oh yes: It proves that everyone hates them. * Obama is on the campaign trail pushing a payroll tax cut â trying to bribe us to reelect him with our money. But I thought we needed more revenue? Oh, weâre going to make it up by raising taxes on the rich. The successful in this country are the people who provided us with all the jobs and technology that led to our cushy lives we now have, yet they always end up the scapegoats. Itâs like we have a goose that lays golden eggs, and any time things go wrong for us we …
Results of InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion Research poll of registered GOP voters conducted for the Florida Times-Union : Newt Gingrich (41 percent), Mitt Romney (17 percent), and Herman Cain (13 percent). The other candidates were all in the single digits. Also, as I mentioned yesterday, thereâs questions about how reliable this outlet is as a pollster.Â
Thereâs a great freedom in being a blogger. Iâm utterly divorced from responsibility, as I have no real power. Which means I can speak a hell of a lot more freely than actual candidates running for office. And I can cheerfully say the kinds of things that theyâd never dare say within four miles of
Yes, it is because we are anti-Mormon bigots. Thatâs it. It has nothing to do with this or with this . From: greg@capitol-ideas.com Subject: Romney Date: November 30, 2011 10:34:47 AM EST To: contact@redstate.com Thanks a lot for playing the Huckabee this year! Huckabee, the bigoted Baptist, took Romney out in 2008 when he colluded with McCain just so a Mormon wouldnât be elected and what happened? We got Obama! Romney is true to his principles. You just havenât taken the time to really understand him. Maybe, just
The Eric Holder Resignation Bandwagon is growing, and apparently, Eric Holder is upset about it. Matthew Boyle at the Daily Caller has done nice work chronicling the EHRB movement on Capitol Hill. Holder chewed out the publication yesterday. No dice. Boyle reports today that GOP Sen. Johnny Isakson of Georgia is the first in the Senate to go on record demanding Holderâs resignation. There will no doubt be more GOP Senators following in his footsteps. But as I pointed out last night on Twitter, Isakson was 1 of 19 Senate GOPers who voted to confirm Holder despite his Clinton-era corruption. The Johnny-come-latelys had all the evidence they needed more than …
When I write about forgiving Newt Gingrichâs sins and whether or not he has matured, it is stuff like this, not his personal life, that I am referring to: THE READERâS DIGEST profile of Speaker Gingrich that I had been working on since October appeared in the April 1995 issue under the title âWill Success Spoil Newt Gingrich?â I am sure it was not what Newt had in mind when he gave me so much of his valuable time. The Gingrich profile and other Readerâs Digest articles still came out under the Evans & Novak byline as they had since we …
Following the contemptible storming of the British Embassy in Iran by violent protestors, President Obama rightly condemned the Iranian government for not controlling the protestors and protecting a diplomatic outpost. In doing so, however, he made yet another embarrassing foreign policy gaffe: referring to the embassy as “English” instead of “British.” How do you think the media would have treated a Republican presidential candidate if he or she made the same mistake? Check out a video of the press conference after the break, and let us know your thoughts in the comments. According to the Heritage Foundation : In case the president is unaware, England forms part of…

This is one of those pieces I probably shouldnât write, but itâs been gnawing away at the back of my mind for⌠good lord, close to two decades. And Iâm tired of holding it back. Years and years ago, I read one of the more fascinating and troubling novels Iâve ever read â Peter Beinartâs
The New York Agency for Community Affairs worked as a front group for the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now (ACORN) and used federal grant funds to make ACORN’s payroll back in 2005 and 2006, according to a new report by the Justice Department’s Inspector General. Investigators questioned $138,129 in grant money spent by NYACA. They found that the organization “did not have any paid employees at the time it received the grant or at any time during the life of the grant-funded project.” From the report: All of…
