I read Katrina’s post with interest, but one thing really caught my attention — so I went to the original New York Times story and checked it out. Yep, the story does indeed say Cain referred to the “character assignation” being conducted against him. I presume he meant to refer to “character assassination”; I will not speculate as to why the word “ assignation ” came to his mind instead. Keep reading this post . . .

David : This is not altogether in my wheelhouse, as I don’t do much by way of what could be called grassroots fighting on abortion or gay marriage, but I see it differently. I think, broadly speaking, Americans strongly tend to, perhaps even always, move in the direction of expanding “rights.” This is why abolition, womens’ suffrage, civil rights, the ADA all succeeded in the end. And it’s why virtually all reform groups on the right and the left try to shape their arguments in terms of rights whenever possible. The very term “entitlement” is a marketing innovation to make welfare into “a right not a privilege” as the old welfare activists used to say…

(Orin Kerr) I recently finished the new book by the late Bill Stuntz, The Collapse of American Criminal Justice . My co-blogger Paul Cassell reviewed it here in the Wall Street Journal , and I wanted to blog my own thoughts about the book. My basic take is that it’s a great book, with many important insights. It’s the most interesting book on the criminal justice system that I’ve read in a long time, and perhaps ever. At the same time, I’m not sure I’m entirely convinced: Stuntz makes a number of claims that strike me as questionable. Plus, his recommendations for reform stuck me as…

**Posted by Phineas The Daily Caller has been carrying lots of articles about the growing calls for Attorney General Holder’s resignation over the Fast and Furious gun-trafficking scandal. And apparently it’s getting to him: when a TDC reporter tried to ask him a question about the growing clamor, Holder snapped : Embattled Attorney General Eric Holder today demanded The Daily Caller stop publishing articles about the growing calls in Congress for his resignation because of the failed Operation Fast and Furious gun-walking program. As Holder’s aide was escorting the attorney general offstage following his remarks Tuesday afternoon at the White House, a Daily Caller reporter introduced himself and shook Holder’s hand. The reporter asked him for a …

(John Hinderaker) Is paranoia a bad quality in an Attorney General? One would think so, and I speculate that Eric Holder’s tenure may be drawing to a close. Yesterday, Holder had a bizarre encounter with a Daily Caller reporter: Embattled Attorney General Eric Holder today demanded The Daily Caller stop publishing articles about the growing calls in Congress for his resignation because of the failed Operation Fast and Furious gun-walking program. As Holder’s aide was escorting the attorney general offstage following his remarks Tuesday afternoon at the White House, a Daily Caller reporter introduced himself and shook Holder’s hand. The reporter asked him for a response to the growing chorus of federal …

My friend Tim Dalrymple asks just this question over at Patheos. He shared his observation with Fred Barnes, who put it this way : Foes of gay rights are now seen by the press as fighting the bad war, roughly analogous to Vietnam. Pro-lifers are waging the good war, like World War II. “You get much less grief fighting against abortion than you do fighting to preserve traditional marriage,” says Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List. Keep reading this post . . .

Herman Cain said today he would remain in the race, reports the New York Times . Campaigning in Ohio (slated to have its primary in June) today, Cain said, “They want you to believe that with enough character assignation on me, I will drop out! The American people have a different idea. The American people are going to raise some Cain in 2012.” On Good Morning America today, Ginger White gave more details about the alleged affair: Keep reading this post . . .

Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers. The prospect of domination of the nation’s scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present – and is gravely to be regarded. Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of …

Will the New York Times ombudsman respond to this serious charge from a fellow mainstream journalist — or will it be whitewashed away? David Newhouse, editor of the Patriot-News, has blown the whistle on the Fishwrap of Record’s reckless disclosure of identifying details about one of Penn State accused child predator/rapist Jerry Sandusky’s victims: The Patriot-News, the newspaper that broke the story of the child sex-abuse case against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, has been careful not to reveal the names of the alleged victims in its reporting. But David Newhouse, editor of the Patriot-News, is livid that the New York Times revealed too…

I ‘ve mentioned before about the seemingly unbridgeable ideological divide confronting our federal representatives in Washington, DC. This seems to be a generational version of the same thing (my emphasis): Young folks today appear to have the same dreams and ambitions that my generation had at the same age. We wanted an education, a good career, a home of our own and a happy life. The main difference between today’s youthful opinion is that most of us expected to stay in school, work hard and earn a good life instead of having it given to us at someone else’s expense — a point of view expressed by many young adults today. Proof of the pudding showed …

If you’ve been to an event in D.C. about civil rights issues, Barbara Arnwine is probably a familiar face. As executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, she’s most recently been calling attention to the impact that voter ID laws could have on keeping minorities from the polls. But this week Arnwine has been in the news for a different reason: her home was raided by Prince George’s County Police on Nov. 21 because police suspect her nephew in an armed robbery. Arnwine says that police didn’t tell her why her home was being searched and held her family at gunpoint for several hours. She’s considering a lawsuit. “They never said why they were coming in, they never showed a search warrant to my client, they never told her why they were …

Conservative radio host, blogger, CNN contributor, Dana Loesch had Newt Gingrich on yesterday to discuss his campaign for president. During the conversation Dana asked Newt if he had heard that the Washington Post was asking the public for hits on the former House Speaker. Newt said he wasn’t aware of this and added: “The news media’s never quite found itself as excited about the facts about Barack Obama. Would rather worry about rumors about conservatives than facts about the President.” Spoken like a true patriot. NewsBusters reported, via Lucianne : DANA LOESCH: I’ve noticed that Aaron Blake who writes for the Washington Post’s The Fix, it’s a political blog, has reached out to readers asking them to crowd-source your past to see if they can get some skeletons in your closet. **Posted by Phineas The Occupiers all like to claim they’re into mass democracy: general assemblies, voting by up and down-twinkles , free speech, and all that jazz. And all while making obnoxious prats of themselves. Prats who don’t understand a thing about real democratic societies… but I digress. Anyway, it shouldn’t be surprising that I took a special joy in seeing Colorado Governor Hickenlooper (D!) and the crowd he had come to address use democracy against the Occupiers. Enjoy: Major up-twinkles. via Jonah Goldberg (Crossposted at Public Secrets )

In a live report from Baghdad on Wednesday's NBC Today, co-host Ann Curry described her arrival to the country with Vice President Biden: “Security is heavy amid an uptick in violence as the U.S. brings its divisive eight-year war in Iraq to an end. The Vice President timed his trip to the last days of America's war in Iraq.” Later in the report, Curry listed the cost of the war: “Eight years after 'shock and awe,' after the toppling and death of Saddam Hussein, after at least 4,473 American lives lost, and 32,226 wounded in action, and a roughly estimated 100,000 Iraqi civilian deaths, America leaves a significantly less violent but not completely stable Iraq.” Curry touted one Iraqi family that claimed no ethnic violence existed in Iraq before…
