The obligatory Cain “inappropriate conduct” thread

[Posted by Karl] Well, that’s a title I did not see coming: Herman Cain’s campaign headquarters has released a response to a story , broken this evening on Politico, that in the 1990s two female employees of the National Restaurant Association “complained to colleagues and senior association officials about inappropriate behavior by Cain,” who at the time was head of the trade group. Calling the story “thinly sourced allegations,” Cain spokesman J.D. Gordon said: “Since Washington establishment critics haven’t had much luck in attacking Mr. Cain’s ideas to fix a bad economy and create jobs, they are trying to attack him in any way they can….

The Oppo Dump on Herman Cain Begins in Earnest

Hours after the Politico’s Roger Simon accused the GOP of being racist, the Politico begins a sincere effort to destroy the black guy running to be the GOP’s Presidential nominee. The opposition dump on Herman Cain has begun in earnest. Before getting into the details, let’s pay attention to what this means. It means for certain that Herman Cain’s lead in the polling is real — very, very real. People are taking him seriously. Mr. Cain is about to spend a week in Washington answering questions and giving speeches. Someone wanted to make sure he has a miserable week. The allegations are pretty straight …

ThinkProgress Selectively Edits Bill Gates to Misrepresent His Views on Taxing the Rich

One of the leading liberal propaganda outlets in the nation is the website ThinkProgress which specializes in selectively editing news reports and spreading misinformation to receptive media outlets from coast to coast. A fine example of how they deceptively operate transpired Sunday with an article promoted at their website with the teaser ” Bill Gates 'In Favor' Of Higher Taxes On Wealthy ” (videos follow with transcript and commentary): Today on ABC’s This Week, Microsoft founder Bill Gates added his voice to the chorus, scoffing at the idea that the rich …

Good Grief… Loony Seattle Professors to Begin Teaching Classes in Support of #Occupy Seattle Movement

Seattle Community College teachers have decided to begin teaching classes in support of the Occupy Seattle movement. The classes will include “The Art of the Protest Sign” and “Filming to Document Human Rights Violations.” My FOX Spokane reported: It’s not clear if the professors will instruct the youths on poop bombs, tent rape and violence against cops. MSNBC reported: A day after Occupy Seattle moved to the campus, instructors at Seattle Central Community College planned to begin teaching classes in support of the group. The classes, scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Sunday, were to be held…

Who Is Barncat Jones?

(John Hinderaker) I have no idea. But maybe someday that question will resonate along the lines of, “Who is John Galt?” Barncat is a musician and satirist of considerable talent. We linked to his Elvis Presley parody, “The Solyndra Song,” here . Now Barncat has come out with “Hope & Change,” a Springsteen adaptation sung to the tune of “Glory Days.” Which seems appropriate, given how far behind him President Obama’s glory days are. Here it is. Pass it on. This sort of satire is a potent weapon–”Hope &

A One-woman Wrecking Crew, Revisited

(John Hinderaker) A long-time reader comments on one of our “picks” from last week – a Politico piece about Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin’s relentless attacks on Rick Perry: Ben Smith’s Politico story about Jennifer Rubin reminded me of several Power Line posts from the last presidential cycle. Back then, a former blogger on this site, noting Rubin’s attacks on three major Republican contenders, called her “a one-woman wrecking crew.” What amused me is that in the last cycle Rubin’s main target was Mitt Romney – the primary, and presumably …

One Size (Still Not Fitting All)

Here’s the Daily Telegraph ’s Ambrose Evans-Pritchard with another gloomy round-up: The structural gap cannot be closed by debt-deflation in the South. It could arguably be mitigated by ECB reflation, yet the central bank has done the opposite, blighting the chances that Spain might just be able to struggle back to viability.  Spain is cutting stoically. The ECB did not have to have make matters worse by tightening monetary policy as well. It chose to do so, knowing that core inflation is tame and that Europe’s banks are about to shrink their balance sheets drastically. Keep reading this post . . .

Should Obesity Be Considered in Child Custody Disputes?

(Jonathan H. Adler) The WSJ reports that concerns about childhood obesity are beginning to play a role in child custody disputes: Family-law practitioners and legal experts say mothers and fathers in custody lawsuits are increasingly hurling accusations at each other about the nutrition and obesity of their children, largely in attempts to persuade judges that their kids are getting less-than-optimal care in the hands of ex– and soon-to-be-ex-spouses. . . . Family-law practitioners and legal experts say mothers and fathers in…

Coptic Bishop: Christians Are Experiencing Their Worst Time in Recent Centuries

Earlier this month Egyptian forces drove over Coptic Christians in military vehicles at a rally in Cairo. The Copts were protesting violence against Christians in Egypt. This weekend Coptic Bishop Anba Stephanos told Aid to the Church in Need reporters that Coptic Christians are experiencing their worst time in recent centuries. Stephanos also said that all Coptic Christians are “prepared for martyrdom, as at the beginnings of Christianity. ACN website reported, via Free Republic : Bishop Anba Stephanos (Orthodox Coptic) of Beba and Elfashn Coptic Bishop: “Christians are currently experiencing their worst time in recent centuries” Christians in Egypt are currently experiencing their worst time in recent centuries. Debating Miss World, With Illustrations

(John Hinderaker) Beauty pageants and debating are two of my favorite things. My youth was misspent–not, unfortunately, due to too many beautiful girls, but rather because I devoted an inordinate amount of time to competitive debate. These two interests collided Friday night, as 122 Miss World contestants descended on Cambridge University, and in particular the Cambridge Union Society, which bills itself as the world’s oldest debating society. The topic of discussion was the merits of the Miss World competition, and beauty pageants in general: Unsurprisingly it was a packed chamber, with members jostling to catch a glimpse of the gorgeous girls, and ITV even streamed the event live. Miss Scotland, Miss Zimbabwe, Miss Botswana and Miss Puerto Rico opened the proceedings with speeches about the fundraising activities …

Solving the Student Debt Problem

(Jonathan H. Adler) Government subsidized loans have helped fuel a massive student loan bubble.  Student loan debt now tops $1 trillion.  President Obama has proposed a modest reform to ease the burden on some, but it will not do much.  In a NY Post op-ed , Glenn “Instapundit” Reynolds has a more interesting reform idea: I think we should return to the days when student loans were dischargeable in bankruptcy, starting five years after graduation. This will allow graduates who are unable to pay to get out from under …

ClimateGate II: How Will Al Gore and His Global Warming-Loving Media Respond?

As NewsBusters reported Sunday, a new ClimateGate scandal has erupted involving a University of California at Berkeley professor accused of trying to mislead the public by hiding that his research determined global warming has stopped. Some on the Left heralded the now questionable study including Nobel laureate Al Gore whose excitement was published at the Huffington Post Wednesday: Climate skeptics were hoping this study would debunk data proving the existence of the climate crisis — instead it reaffirmed the science …With the evidence reconfirmed (again), I would hope that skeptics would rethink their position and join me in pushing our government, and governments around the world, to take steps to solve the climate crisis. Quite comically, Gore was a little late to this discussion, for the article …

#Occupy Oakland Protester Admits Leftist Mob Pelted Police With Bottles & Rocks Before Cops Responded (Video)

Yup. They’re the spitting image of the tea party. Yessiree. An Occupy Oakland protester admitted on national television that the far left violent mob was pelting bottles and rocks at police before the officers responded with tear gas and stun grenades. However, she felt the police response was inappropriate. What an idiot. She doesn’t show much remorse, does she? Also… The Barack Obama-endorsed Occupy Oakland goons chucked paint at police officers this weekend while chanting, “This is why we call you pigs!” Via The Blaze : A crowd of roughly 400 Occupy Oakland protesters clashed with police Tuesday evening while trying to reclaim a campsite that they had been ousted from earlier in the day. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the crowd marched from the public library toward Frank Ogawa Plaza at about 5 p.m., vowing to …

Population Bomb Epic Fail, Part 2

(Steven Hayward) Steven Den Beste and a number of other commenters anticipated much of my second planned installment about the arrival of the 7 billionth human being tomorrow, noting that the issue is irrelevant to the Left: all that matters to the Left is gaining power.  Any issue will do. But it is hard to credit the Left even with good intentions when you see how quickly the institutions they set up become corrupt, vindicating Orwell’s analysis of the true character of the Left, or perhaps Eric Hoffer’s famous axiom about “true believers,” namely, “Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket.”  Both population then, and global warming now, quickly degenerated to the full-on racket stage. Matthew Connelly’s great book, Fatal Misconception: The Struggle to Control World Population , describes …
