(Scott Johnson) Minnesota liberalized the law allowing citizens to arm themselves in the early days of the administration of Governor Pawlenty. The law vastly expanded the right of Minnesota citizens to acquire licenses to carry guns, a right formerly subject to the unfettered discretion of local police chiefs or sheriffs. Liberalization of the law carried out a long-standing Republican commitment and was of course the subject of daily hysteria in the local media, but so far as I am aware has had no ill effects. The virtues of the law were on display last week. Politico’s Martin Dodges Question On Cain Details

Herman Cain has been taking heat for his response to questions about Politico's story on alleged sexual harassment. But today on Morning Joe, it was Politico's own Jonathan Martin, lead author of the story, who was being evasive about the details of the allegations against Cain. Incredibly, when Willie Geist asked him to describe specifically what Politico is accusing Cain of having done, Martin hemmed, hawed then ultimately said “we're just not going to get into the details of exactly what happened with these women,” beyond the sketchy generalities in the Politico story. Poisoned Halloween Candy an Urban Myth

(Jonathan H. Adler) From today’s Los Angeles Times : Every year, parents and police departments worry about tricks in their kids’ Halloween treats: razor blades in apples, poison in candy bars. But incidents of candy poisoning are very, very rare — if they exist at all. “There have never been any substantiated cases of strangers tampering with Halloween candy,” said Susan Whiteside, in an email to Booster Shots Friday. Whiteside is a spokesperson for the National Confectioners Assn., which provides an FAQ on Halloween candy safety and coordinates with law enforcement to track reports of tainted treats. Mr. Cain’s in the Spotlight

The Politico Herman Cain story about a settlement regarding an accusation during his time at the National Restaurant Association has already won the morning, as Politico likes to say. But, as Byron York discussed on Bill Bennett’s radio show this morning, accusation-wise, “Nothing extremely clear… it’s all really quite vague.” Detail-wise, it doesn’t help that the “Cain campaign did not do a great job” in the immediate follow-up to the story last night, in a statement and to Geraldo Rivera on Fox News. Arkansas House Candidate Accused Of Con Job In Alaska

A serial campaigner running for Congress in Arkansas is under investigation in Alaska for fraud, after allegedly pocketing money from a fundraiser for a wounded veteran. Drew Pritt announced on Thursday that he is running for Congress in Arkansas’ 2nd District, the seat held by Republican Tim Griffin. Pritt, a Democrat whose website expired last week, in 2006 said he was running for Lt. Governor of Arkansas, but never filed the paperwork. He also lost a campaign for the Little Rock School Board. But Pritt has something of a checkered past outside of his failed runs for office, which have become something of a joke in Arkansas.
