(John Hinderaker) Todayâs big news story is the revelation that while he was with the National Restaurant Association, Herman Cain was accused of some sort of impropriety by two women. It is impossible to know what to make of this story. Apparently no formal claims were brought, Politicoâs description of the events that gave rise to the complaints is too vague to evaluate, and the amounts reportedly paid to the women in connection with their departure from NRA were small enough to be consistent with just about any scenario. Still, Politicoâs story makes this article in todayâs Minneapolis Star Tribune timely…

My New York Post column  today argues in favor of the flat tax â not primarily on economic grounds but on philosophical grounds. It is simply wrong for half the population to carry the other half on its back in terms of federal income taxes. And donât give me that boilerplate blather about how the poor pay âpayrollâ taxes into the doomed Ponzi Scheme known as Social Security ; thatâs entirely unrelated to the consequences of the 16th Amendment â one of the little presents the Progressive Era has bequeathed us to bedevil us. Letâs start with the facts: Keep reading this post . . .

I’m not sure trainwreck really captures the totality of Herman Cain’s day. I’m thinking something like meteor making high velocity impact into Earth. I believe Herman Cain just said that he doesn’t know whether the National Restaurant Association made a cash payment to his accusers. He ‘hopes not.’ But he doesn’t know. Is he going to go to them to find out? I think he said no because it’s confidential. Not certain on that last point. He may have meant that it’s confidential so he’s not able to get the information and make it public.

Egyptâs new anti-discrimination law â hastily announced by the transitional government in the wake of an international outcry over the October 9 killing of 27 mostly Coptic protestors in Cairoâs Maspero district â is being put to the test. The brutal murder of a teenage Christian student in southern Egypt on October 16 illustrates the ongoing threat that Egyptâs Christian minority faces from growing religious extremism, including within its public school system, and the discriminatory denial of justice in cases involving religion. He was the third Minnesota Islamist to blow himself up. Abdisalan Hussein Ali , an American-Somali who was 19 at the time he disappeared from Minnesota in November 2008. ( MSNBC ) Abdisalan Hussein Ali was elected president of the Somali Student Association at Edison High School in Minnesotat. He pursued a pre-med track at the University of Minnesota. Last week Abdialan blew himself up in Somalia. They calle him bullethead. MSNBC reported: A man who blew himself up in an attack in the Somali capital on Saturday reportedly grew up in Minneapolis and was known by the FBI as one of 20 Somali Americans to have joined an al-Qaida-linked militant group. Abdisalan Hussein Ali, 22, was suspected of being…

I am willing to give Herman Cain the benefit of the doubt and assume that the sexual-harassment allegation(s) against him was entirely baseless. Here is what troubles me. Mr. Cain says: âIf the Restaurant Association did a settlement, I wasnât even aware of it, and I hope it wasnât for much, because nothing happened. So if there was a settlement, it was handled by some of the other offices that worked for me at the association, so the answer is absolutely not.â Keep reading this

**Posted by Phineas Billâs back with another episode of Afterburner, this time taking a look at how progressives (including Supreme Court justices) have regularly twisted (and even tortured) the plain meaning of the Constitution to get what they want, rather than what the document allows. Bill focuses on two much-abused clauses in Article I, section 8 , âGeneral Welfareâ and âCommerce,â to show that, interpreted in the progressive manner, as part of a â Living Constitution ,â ( 1 ) these clauses stop being limits on governmentâs power and instead become grants of unlimited power. My own view is that of originalism, that the document has to be read as the Convention and the …

4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in oneâs youth. 5 Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. â 127th Psalm (4,5) (HT:Biblegateway.com) I came home a little late from my morning jog this morning and later slammed down that cup of morning coffee before rushing out the door to work. As I drank, I watched a snippet of the morning news show of WAFF â 48. Sometime today, the Seven Billionth human being will be born. I consider this a remarkable victory for mankind. As late as 1900, we were unable to support a …

T oday brings us a scaaaaaary bunch of ghoulish economic statistical releases: The Chicago PMI slipped to 58.4 from last monthâs 60.4, though it did beat expectations. The Dallas Fed reported an increase in the Business Activity Index from -14.4 to 2.3, while the Production index slipped to 4.1 from 5.9. OK. So that was neither scary, nor ghoulish. Happy Halloween, anyway. ~ Dale Franks Google+ Profile Twitter Feed

Sadly, Herman Cainâs predictions have come true. In May he stated that he was “ready for the same high-tech lynching that [Clarence Thomas] went through — for the good of this country.” That's what Politico is doing with its unsubstantiated and thoroughly hypocritical hit piece against him. Anyone in the press that gives this story oxygen is equally hypocritical. In the eyes of the liberal media, Herman Cain is just another uppity black American who has had the audacity to leave the liberal plantation. So they must destroy him, just as they tried destroying Clarence Thomas. Â The richest irony here is that the same media that refused to cover evidence of an alleged rape by a state Attorney General who …

Herman Cain denied today that he had ever sexually harassed anyone. âI have never sexually harassed anyone,â Cain told Fox News in an interview this morning. âYes, I was falsely accused while I was at the National Restaurant association and I say falsely because it turned out, after the investigation to be baseless.â Keep reading this post . . .

For people who arenât in the political bubble that is Washington, D.C., the ways of Congress can seem confusing and mysterious. So let me share a story about one Halloween in Congress that will shed a little light on how that ecosystem operates. Â A few years ago, I was a yeoman staffer for an obscure committee. I arrived at work early that Halloween, but despite the hour, there was still a line to go through the security screening, which annoyed me. When I looked at the front of the line to see what was causing the holdup, I saw an attractive young woman in a costume. Wearing costumes for Halloween was not uncommon on the Hill, especially on a day (like that one) where neither the House or the Senate…

Opponents of the reforms in Issue 2 blame busted local budgets on the way Governor Kasich handled the $8 billion deficit Ted Strickland left behind. In effect, government union bosses who thrive on a broken status quo insist the problem is too little spending . Like all leftists who decry spending cuts, union bosses want to raise our taxes . For proof, consider Ohio school districtsâ five-year forecasts from October 2010. Based on papered-over Strickland state figures â before Governor Kasich was even elected â districts projected major …

(Kenneth Anderson) Glenn Reynolds is correct in his weekend post to point to the social theory of the New Class as key to understanding the convulsions in the middle and upper middle class; Iâve written about it myself here at VC and in a 1990s law journal book review essay . Â The angst is partly income, of course â but itâs also in considerable part, as Glenn notes, âcharacterized as much by self-importance as by higher income, and is far more eager to keep the proles in their place than, say, [Anne] Applebaumâs small-town dentist. Itâs thus not …
