Some Democrats joining Republicans in asking for Napolitano to step down

Republicans have been voicing concerns about Janet Napolitano’s qualifications to run the massive Homeland Security department even before the failed Christmas day airline bombing. Their cries for her resignation have grown in volume after she claimed the “system worked” after a terrorist who had been previously reported to US officials by his father, was able to board an American airliner with 80 grams of high explosive, and but for the detonator malfunctioning, would have blown up the jet and killed hundreds of people as the plane approached Detroit.
Napolitano took heat earlier in the year, when she followed the White House’s lead on striking terrorism from the administration’s vocabulary, and referred to terrorist attacks as “man-made natural disasters.” The shear ludicrousness of that term completely trumped the White House’s refusal to use the phrase “war on terror.”
Now, some Democrats are joining the chorus of those asking for Napolitano to be replaced:
New Jersey State Senate President Richard Codey, a Democrat, wrote a letter to Napolitano this week calling on her to step down. He said Napolitano, an attorney and former Arizona governor, does not have the experience for the post she is in.
“We should have someone who doesn’t need to go in there and learn about terrorism, learn about security,” Codey told Fox News. “How close were these 300 people on this plane from losing their lives because homeland security broke down? Boy, it was really close.”
Codey said a candidate “well-versed” in intelligence should step into the job.
While it is unclear whether Napolitano directly fumbled the ball in regards to the failed terrorist bombing of the Northwest Jet, it is clear that she is more concerned with being politically correct than she is about protecting America from future terrorist attacks — or, should we say, protecting America from future “man made natural disasters.”
