As the uproar over Acorn has faded away, the Senate no longer willing to defund Acorn
Back in September, both the House and Senate overwhelmingly passed legislation to defund Acorn. However, they voted and passed their amendments on two seperate bills, leading some to believe it was simply a CYA vote with no real intent of defunding Acorn. Acorn, in addition to providing advice to prostitutes ‘tricking’ the IRS, and claiming underage, illegal immigrants working as prostitutes as dependents, was also a major force in the election of President Obama.
It began in late November when President Obama’s justice department prepared a five-page memorandum that said that Acorn could be paid for any contracts signed prior to the funding ban.
Last night, Rep. Tom Latham (R-IA) offered an amendment during deliberations on the Democrats’ massive year-end appropriations bill to clarify the prohibition on federal funds going to ACORN or its subsidiaries. That amendment was shot down on a 5-9 party line vote as Republicans sided with taxpayers while Democrats stood with ACORN.
